6 People You Need to Start a Revolution

Successful change movements run on diversity. Here are the essential skill sets no revolution can win without.

With the 99% Spring up and rolling and set to bring 100,000 new activists to the party this weekend, there’s some increased friction between various progressive groups who are working to expand the movement this year.

It’s a good time to remember that mass movements are — by design and necessity — big and diverse, encompassing lots of different kinds of people who bring all kinds of skills, resources, interests and priorities to the table. As progressives, we’ve always believed that diversity is our most important strength.

There’s not enough that can be said about the genius of Occupy at raising America’s awareness of the corporatization of our culture, and defining and framing the predations of the 1 percent against the 99 percent as the defining conflict of our age. But now it’s time to take the message out of the parks and streets and into the American mainstream. If the goal is to build a truly diverse nationwide movement that will change the foundations of the American economy, getting more established groups like MoveOn.org, Rebuild the Dream and the labor unions involved can only be a good thing. Read more…

Earth Hour: too little too late

Contrary to popular belief, “little things” can’t change the world. Many scientists believe that Planet Earth could already be past the point where human activity is the prime mover of climate change. Evidence is trickling in that we are nearing the point where further change in the Earth’s climate could continue even without human activity contributing to it. In short, it is possible that even if humans were to disappear from the face of the planet today, the trajectory of change in weather patterns that humans initiated has already been set. This music video was created as part of the Doo-Occupy, Bail Out America project, a collaboration instigated by the Backbone Campaign (http://BackboneCampaign.org) to spread best practices in community organizing for eviction protection, student debt relief and other economic democracy causes – and combine them with the strategic thinking and the hottest tactical tools used by Backbone Campaign and others.

Our hope is to provide focus and capacity to the emerging populist uprising. We wish to help amplify its power through inspiring movement-building campaigns that are rooted in communities and deliver victories that make a material difference in people’s lives.

Through this we will grow our movement from the power we have to the power we need to transform society and establish a new social contract based not on citizenship or property, but on universal human rights.

The Doo-Occupy, Bail Out America 2 Days of Training, 2 Days of Action in DC, March 31-April 3 is an intensive “Learning by Doing” action training that will deliver organizing and tactical tools to take home, as well as the experience of participating in a couple of the most fun and savvy actions Backbone has ever undertaken.
